This talk shows just what a malleable metaphor “Islam” was, is, and continues to be. It can be used to critique the West and its investiture n the colonial project, it can be used to undermine its scholarly productions about Others, and it is now frequently invoked in calls to decolonize the Academy. At the same time, however, Islam continues to function as the anti-West par excellence, against which the so-called West can articulate and uphold those values imagined to define itself. Islam, thus, threatens and subverts the West at those places in which it is most vulnerable.
